316 stainless steel actually adds Ni, Cr, and Mo elements on the basis of 304 stainless steel. Because 316 stainless steel has better resistance to chloride corrosion than 304 stainless steel, it is widely used in the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, and surgical equipment industry etc.

The differences between 316 and 316L stainless steel are as follows:
1. The molybdenum content in 316L stainless steel is slightly higher than that in 316 stainless steel.
2. The upper limit of the C content of 316 is 0.08%, while the upper limit of the C content of 316L is 0.03%. The higher the C content, the easier it is to cause intergranular corrosion.
3. The lower limits of tensile and yield strength of 316 are 515 and 205 MPa, respectively, and the lower limits of tensile and yield strength of 316L are 485 and 170 MPa, respectively.
4. Heat resistance. In the range of 800-1575 degrees, it is best not to use 316 stainless steel continuously, but when 316 stainless steel is used continuously outside this temperature range, the stainless steel has good heat resistance. The carbide precipitation resistance of 316L stainless steel is better than that of 316 stainless steel.
5. Heat treatment. Annealed in the temperature range of 1850-2050 degrees, then rapidly annealed, then rapidly cooled. 316 stainless steel cannot be hardened by overheat treatment.
6. Welding. 316 stainless steel has good weldability and can be welded by all standard welding methods. In order to obtain the best corrosion resistance, the welded section of 316 stainless steel needs to be post-weld annealed. Post weld annealing is not required if 316L stainless steel is used.
